One-on-One Puppy Training

One-on-One Puppy Training

There is nothing quite like a new puppy. Puppies bring joy and excitement into the home. But bringing a puppy into your home and supporting it to grow into a confident, calm, and well-mannered dog can also bring a variety of challenges with it. From when you bring your puppy home for the first time, the adjustment that needs to happen within its home environment to the socialisation period and the different growth stages your puppy goes through on its way to adulthood presents various opportunities and challenges.

Puppy Training Dunedin

Puppies have the wolf as ancestors. They grow up in our human society, a world they do not understand. Paws4Success coaches you to see the world through the eyes of your puppy. Puppies need their owners to establish leadership in a way the puppy understands and to teach them the rules that help them to adjust to the human living environment (den). These rules give the puppy a secure framework and structure, giving it a sense of security and direction to become a confident, calm and well-mannered dog. There is a special time frame which extends from week 3 to 16, the socialisation period, during which the puppy needs to be exposed to various stimuli. Lack of or insufficient exposure to multiple stimuli can lead to behavioural issues in the future, such as the puppy becoming fearful, anxious or aggressive. Behaviours that can be very difficult to deal with. These behavioural issues have their root cause in either a lack of or insufficient exposure of the puppy to new stimuli. Sadly, this causes 80% of dogs under three years to be euthanised.

Basic Puppy Training

Puppies that just have come home are prone to experience high levels of anxiety since they have been removed from the dam and their litter mates. From week eight until the end of week 16, the end of the socialisation period, each of these weeks requires a focus on different stimuli the puppy needs to be familiarised with to become a well-adjusted, confident and well-mannered adult dog. Paws4Success guides you through this process. Our services range from guiding you on how to find a puppy to fit your lifestyle and living situation, testing for a puppy's personality while still in the litter, to selecting a puppy from the litter. We provide advice on managing the challenges of bringing your puppy home; we teach the importance of the first two days and how to support your puppy through these initial days at your home.

Additionally, we advise on cross-fostering, how to house train your puppy, the feeding routine and developing a breed-specific exercise plan. We offer a detailed plan on what stimuli your puppy needs to be exposed to each week. We can provide further advice for the period ranging from 16 weeks onwards, through to the juvenile phase, early puberty, and late puberty to young adulthood, each of which comes with its unique set of challenges and the best way to navigate these different phases.

Best Way to Train a Puppy

We at Paws4Success are passionate about puppies having the best start in life. It grieves us that so many dogs under the age of three years are euthanised because of preventable behavioural issues rooted in lack of or insufficient socialisation. We guide you through establishing the four puppy leadership pillars by which you can build a trusted and harmonious relationship with your furry friend. You are speaking your puppy's language by applying the four leadership pillars of dog leadership. This way, communication between you and your puppy becomes highly effective since you communicate with your dog in the only language your dog understands. These four leadership pillars build a sound foundation for your life together as well as obedience training and any other aspirations you may have for your dog.
